My son got me a new game for my birthday this year. Don’t Quote Me is a fun, yet challenging trivia game which is distributed by Outset Media.
We played the game with friends last week and it was really fun!
This great group of friends live in our neighborhood and we have had game night with them several times over the past 24 years. When our kids were little, it was difficult and expensive to get sitters, so we would all go to one family’s house, bring an appetizer or dessert or wine and the host family would provide the meal.
The group used to consist of four families – sadly one has moved away – and that meant 13 kids between the ages of 0-8. Yikes! The kids entertained themselves mostly by playing their own games or watching a movie in the next room, but there always seemed to be a kid or two at the table with us. Those were good times!
Now there are just six people at the table – three couples who are mostly empty nesters. We all enjoy trivia types of games and Don’t Quote Me fits that category.
The game cards have five categories – Pop culture, Literature, Leaders, Movies, Sports. For our group, that meant something for everyone.
Each card has a quote at the top. For instance on a Movie card, the quote is, “Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine”.
When the card is read, you can guess the Movie title right away if you know it for four points.
If you don’t know it, you get a clue, in this case, “Humphrey Bogart”. If you guess the movie title at this point it is worth three points.
Still too tough? You can get another hint, this time it’s worth two points. From this card, the clue is “North Africa”.
The last chance to score, for only one point, is a multiple choice. The choices are “Casablanca”, “The African Queen” or “The Big Sleep”. The answer is in bold type on the card – Casablanca.
Pretty simple, right. We did find some of the questions really challenging, even with all the clues. But I prefer a game with a little challenge and Don’t Quote Me was the perfect amount.
The game rules instruct the dealer to give each player 10 cards. The game is to be played with Player One reading a card to Player Two, giving them clues as needed. When they guess correctly (or give up) then Player Two reads a card to Player Three.
We played it a little differently. We split into teams – guys and girls – and placed the cards in the center of the table. We played as teams giving the whole team a chance to talk and guess, making one person the spokesperson on each side.
We kept score on the provided score sheet. The game rules say that you play ten rounds, but we just played until someone looked at the clock and announced it was time to go home. (The girls won, by the way!)
Don’t Quote Me is great game night game for adults. The box says 12+, but I think there are some tough trivia questions for a twelve year old.
The game has 396 double sided cards – 792 quotes, so you can play Don’t Quote Me for awhile before you run out of new cards.
Think you might add Don’t Quote Me to your game night list? Let me know what you think of it!
