Over the last few months, I have played several games over Zoom with friends and family. Recently I sat down with my friends to play virtual Pictionary and it was a lot of fun!
There are tons of versions of this game. I always enjoyed the classic game in the blue box. It was one of our first games as a couple. This was pre-dry erase board. You used a big easel with pad of paper or a chalkboard. (Yes, I am that old!)
I didn’t have an easel at home so the paper would always slip down as an excited player was frantically trying to draw out the item on the Pictionary cards.
Now they have a version of the game that comes with dry erase boards. It’s fine if you are playing with a small group at the table, but someone always has to “read” upside down.
Now that I played it on Zoom, I found it really is easier.You just have to share your screen and use the white board feature. I like it more than in person.
So how do you play it on Zoom? Let me show you.
First, set up a Zoom meeting as you normally would. Invite your friends and allow video, audio and screen sharing. When in the meeting, at the bottom of the page, select the “share screen” menu item.
It will bring up all the screens/tabs you have open (a word document or a website) plus a screen named “whiteboard”.
You will see a blank screen with very simple controls – select, draw, erase, etc. Simply click on draw and use your mouse to create just as if you had a dry erase marker in your hand.
The players will all see your screen and start shout out their guesses as they would if you were playing in person. Use the time limits and other rules as you would normally play.
When it is the next person’s turn, simply press the garbage can icon to clear the screen and let the next person take over.
The only disadvantage to playing Pictionary with a whiteboard is that it doesn’t work with iPhones. Players will have to play on a computer, laptop or iPad or Android phone. But there is a solution.
Instead of using the whiteboard feature, iPhone users can use a free drawing app and when it’s their turn, they will share their screen and players can see that app being used.
